Mike Podmaniczky is a conservator of furniture and related objects with an independent and studio in Wilmington, DE. He specializes in the conservation and reproduction of historic furniture, picture frames and other gilded and mixed media objects, as well as contemporary studio furniture and decorative arts. Mike is particularly interested in the interaction of conservation and historic interpretation within small museums and historic sites.

After graduating from Kenyon College with an Honors BA in Studio Art Mike spent 15 years as a craftsman. He worked as a model maker, foundry pattern maker, furniture maker, and boat builder, eventually turning his attention to conservation. He was a member of the first class (1989) of furniture conservators trained at the Smithsonian Institution and holds an MA in Decorative Arts Conservation. For 21 years he worked as a furniture conservator at Winterthur Museum and taught at the Winterthur/ University of Delaware Program on Art Conservation. He taught conservation and historic furniture-making at West Dean College, in the UK, returning to the Delaware Valley in 2010. Mike has an extensive publication history in conservation, craft practices and decorative art history. The exhibition The Incredible Elastic Chairs of Samuel Gragg that he conceived and curated, highlighting his research into that Boston chair maker has been preserved on the Chipstone Foundation web site.
